Just before dawn, on Thursday, January 25th, 2024 Joel Melton passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Brooklyn after a two-and-a-half-year battle with colon cancer.

His loved ones will keep this website - joelvmelton.com - and social accounts active in order to both communicate about memorial projects and stand as archives of remembrance.

While, there is far too much to be said in a single piece of writing about Joel, his life, his work, and the many, many people whose lives he was a part of, below is a brief account of the weather on that Thursday:

A gentle rain fell in the early hours of the morning and slowly faded into an overcast, yet bright, midday. By evening the sky was clear and greeted by a rising moon that our friend described as “full, and bright, and shining - just like Joel”
